Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator (Free) + What Counts as Good

Engagement rate shows how actively an audience interacts with an account’s content. Brands use it to vet influencers, and creators use it to track what’s working. Enter the numbers below to calculate it.

The bands (low, average, good, excellent) are rough guides. Benchmarks vary by niche and account size, so compare against similar accounts.

How Instagram engagement rate is calculated

The most common formula is engagement rate by followers:

Engagement rate = (likes + comments [+ saves + shares]) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100

Example: 10 posts with 3,500 likes and 150 comments, on an account with 10,000 followers: (3,500 + 150) ÷ 10 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 3.65%.

Other versions you’ll see:

  • By reach: engagements ÷ reach × 100. More accurate, but only the account owner can see reach in Instagram Insights.
  • By impressions or views: useful for Reels, where many viewers don’t follow the account.

Use the same formula every time so your numbers are comparable.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Rough guides for engagement by followers:

Engagement rateWhat it usually means
Under 1%Low: the audience isn’t very active, or followers may be inactive or fake
1–3%Average for many brand and creator accounts
3–6%Good: an engaged audience
Over 6%Excellent, common for smaller niche creators

Smaller accounts usually have higher engagement rates than large ones, so compare like with like.

Why engagement rate matters

  • For brands: it’s a quick check when choosing influencers. A big following with very low engagement can be a red flag. See our list of top influencer marketing agencies if you’d rather have experts vet creators for you.
  • For creators: brands increasingly pay for engagement and content quality, not just follower count.

How to improve your Instagram engagement rate

  1. Post Reels with a strong hook in the first second.

FAQ

Can I check someone else’s engagement rate?

Yes. Likes (where visible), comments and follower counts are public, so you can calculate engagement rate by followers for any public account. Saves, shares and reach are only visible to the account owner.

Do Reels views count as engagement?

Views aren’t usually counted as engagement. Likes, comments, saves and shares are. For Reels, many people also track engagement as a share of views.

Why is my engagement rate dropping as I grow?

That’s normal. Larger audiences include more casual followers. Focus on content that earns saves and shares, which helps reach new people.
